Deep Dive: Switching from Instapaper Premium to wallabag
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
wallabag's extraction and mobile experience are less consistently polished, and the free route makes the user maintain the server that Instapaper hides.
How to deploy wallabag
Hosted wallabag.it subscription or a self-hosted Docker/Compose or PHP installation
What it takes to run
The free route needs Docker or a PHP web stack, a database, a domain and TLS, cron/queue work, backups, and periodic fixes when difficult publishers break content extraction.
Where your data lives
Saved articles, tags, highlights, users, and reading state live in SQLite, MySQL/MariaDB, or PostgreSQL; downloaded article images and application files live in persistent server storage.
Why fork wallabag instead of vibe-coding a Instapaper Premium clone?
The core loop is small enough for a capable coding agent to produce a useful local version in one sitting. For Instapaper Premium, save readable versions of permitted pages, highlight them, and search the archive. The hard boundary is mobile capture, sync, text-to-speech, kindle integration, and parser maintenance, plus capture polish, sync, and content partnerships.
