Deep Dive: Switching from Spotify Premium to Koel
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
It replaces personal-library playback, not Spotify's catalogue, recommendation engine, collaborative playlists, podcasts, or Spotify Connect device handoff.
How to deploy Koel
Download and extract the standalone Koel/FrankenPHP archive, then run the bundled server; Docker is also available
What it takes to run
The macOS standalone binary is not code-signed and needs its quarantine flag removed; public access still needs a stable host and domain/reverse-proxy setup
Where your data lives
Music stays at the configured media path; the standalone build keeps configuration, a SQLite database, logs, cache, images and transcodes under ~/.koel/
Why fork Koel instead of vibe-coding a Spotify Premium clone?
A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Spotify Premium, index and stream a legally owned personal music library with playlists and search. The hard boundary is licensed global catalog, royalties, recommendations, social graph, and delivery infrastructure, plus licensed content, rights, and distribution network.
