Deep Dive: Switching from Busuu Premium to Anki
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
Anki lacks Busuu's structured course and native-speaker correction community, leaving content and feedback to the learner.
How to deploy Anki
Use the Windows installer, macOS DMG or official Linux launcher
Where your data lives
Local profile files including collection.anki2, collection.media and backups; exports use .apkg/.colpkg, with optional AnkiWeb sync
Why fork Anki instead of vibe-coding a Busuu Premium clone?
A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Busuu Premium, build a personal language practice system with user-authored lessons and review. The hard boundary is curriculum, community corrections, speech tools, certification, and mobile apps, plus content, pedagogy, and network.
