Deep Dive: Switching from ELSA Speak to AnkiDroid
Trade-offs, installation & data architecture
What you trade away
AnkiDroid records and replays speech but supplies no automatic phoneme diagnosis, score or corrective coaching.
How to deploy AnkiDroid
Install from Google Play or F-Droid, or sideload the official APK
Where your data lives
An Anki collection and media on the Android device, with .apkg import/export and optional AnkiWeb sync
Why fork AnkiDroid instead of vibe-coding a ELSA Speak clone?
A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For ELSA Speak, record pronunciation practice and provide limited acoustic feedback without diagnostic claims. The hard boundary is proprietary speech models, curriculum, scoring data, mobile polish, and coaching, plus content, pedagogy, and network.
